Department Resources: ENGLISH
As all the resources are barcoded, you can always search the library catalog to find out what we have.
Click on a link below to automatically search for the following:
All English Department resources: Call Number starts with "SR/ENG"
Eng/Hum Grade 6 texts
English - Grade 7 texts
ESOL - Grade 7 texts
English - Grade 8 texts
ESOL - Grade 8 texts
English - IGCSE texts
English - FIB texts
English - DP texts
Most of these set texts are stored in the Book Store on the upper level of the Secondary Library. It's the side-room where the compactor shelves (shown above) are located.
When you want students to check out texts under their own names, take the books out of the compactor shelves and put them on the wall bookcase outside the Book Store. Then tell your students to take one and check it out at the Circulation Desk.
UPDATE: Jan 11, 2012
Sets of books were ordered last term, but have not arrived yet.

Online conference: Library 2.011 - Nov 2 & 3
Library 2.011 is a global online librarian conference being held November 2 & 3, 2011
Read below for more information:
Our staff are being asked to participate in one or more sessions. Unfortunately, many of the sessions are in the middle of the night for us. Below is a printout of the schedule based on Singapore times -- and I've highlighted some of the sessions during waking hours that appeal to me. It doesn't mean everyone needs to be interested in those... But I hope you will find something you want to attend. Library 2.0 Schedule KDa Calendar_2011-10!28!2011!11!04

Create booklists and/or suggest titles for us to buy
[updated 6 June 2012 to be a more general blog post about how to create booklists]
We are always interested in suggestions of books to buy -- whether for the library or a particular department.
There are several ways to do it.
The old-fashioned way would be to create a list of titles/authors and send it to me via email (kda@uwcsea.edu.sg).
You can also click here to use a Google Form to submit information to a Google Spreadsheet for me:
Suggest a Library Resource!
But if you want to give me more information, including an ISBN and book cover image, there are quite a few online tools that make it easy.
NB: you have to register first -- at no cost -- but then you are free to create all kinds of booklists.
The beauty of such tools is that you enter the minimal search terms needed to identify the book (key words from the title, the author's name) and it looks for different editions for you to choose from.
Feel free to use any of them and send me the link.

- Book Depository
- Example of a wishlist labeled "ListA"
- If you use this tool and send me the link to your wishlist, it is VERY easy for me to then just transfer those books to an order form and with one click, they will be ordered. NB: Book Depository has free shipping worldwide (unlike Amazon).
- Amazon Wishlists
- Example of a wishlist called "future reading"
- WorldCat
- Example of a list of "global living" books

- Google Books
- Example of a "bookshelf" list created on PYP professional dev. books
- LibraryThing
- Example of a library "collection" called "to order"
- Shelfari
- Example of a list -- i.e., books tagged "absolute favorites"
- GoodReads
- Example of a "shelf" of middle-school fiction
- Follett Titlewave
- This is an online book ordering service for both American and British books, run by Follett, the company that makes our library catalog software (Destiny). We have a couple of generic accounts available, though we can also get you set up with your own. Please contact me if you want to get login/password details.
- If you create lists in Titlewave, you can then "share" them with me, making it VERY easy for me to then submit an order -- and the books come pre-processed (meaning labels are on them and they are already cataloged, so you can use them as soon as they arrive).
- Sample booklist generated via Titlewave -- professional development books
Want to search for titles/prices? Try these book sites...
- International (free shipping! so a favorite of mine...)
- USA
- Amazon.com
- Follett Titlewave (ask me to set you up with an account)
- Follett Educational Services - for cheaper editions
- UK
- Amazon.co.uk
- Follett Titlewave ask me to set you up with an account)
- Canada
- Australia
Singapore Suppliers
- Kinokuniya - note you can search for books via their website and see what they cost and whether they are in stock -- and even a map of where they are in the store
- Bookaburra Books
- APD Books
- List of publishers they carry

How to get reimbursed for a school resource you've purchased
If you have bought something you want to get reimbursed for, e.g.,
Go to the school website, under Resources & Information / Forms & Templates / Purchasing Forms, and download/print a "Request Form -- Book Order":
Take the filled-out form along with your receipt to one of the libraries and ask to have the item cataloged. Please give an idea of the priority (remembering not everything can be urgent). Also tell them the desired "location" of the resource -- e.g., part of the library collection or in the grade or department collection.
The librarian will barcode and catalog the book and produce a report that will get stapled to the Request Form and the receipt. You can then take the resource and submit the form to Finance -- who will pay you back.

Remember this URL: eastlib.uwcsea.edu.sg
On the walls of both libraries you will see this URL:
If you can remember that, you will always be able to check what we have in the catalog and what we are doing.
I just put up a quick search box on the webpage which will search both catalogs -- and displays both library material and all resources owned by departments/grades -- like the one at the top of this blog.
To get the basic library website showing all four catalogs (Dover Primary, Dover Secondary, East Primary, East Secondary), type: library.uwcsea.edu.sg

APD Book Fair - Wed-Fri, Oct 12-14
There will be a Book Fair under the tent in the Plaza from 8 AM to 4 PM Wed-Fri this week (Oct 12-14).
The vendors -- APD Singapore -- are major suppliers of books for us, both textbooks and library books. (And the owners are Dover parents.) Click here for a list of all the publishers they represent -- for which we get 25% discount off the retail price.
Please feel free to bring your classes down to browse -- and to check it out yourselves.
You are also more than welcome to pick out books for the school to buy for the library -- or for your department. All you have to do is tell the bookstall staff that you want to put this book aside for the school to purchase. They may make you add your name to a clipboard or something. Later I will be given a list of the books put aside and will send it out to everyone to confirm.
You can also just snap photos (if you have a smartphone on you) of the covers of books you're interested in. Don't worry about whether we might have it or not. I can check whether it's already cataloged, waiting to be cataloged, or on an order list.
I have put a set of the APD catalogs in the staff room -- so you can browse them.
NB: We earn book credits equal to 10% of the total sales during this week.
We have book sales by different vendors periodically throughout the year, especially before holiday breaks. The next one will be sometime in late November/December and will be hosted by Bookaburra Books.
